LONG WINDING ROAD
Where better to open out the throttle of your newly tuned S2000 than on the rural roads of North Wales? This temptation was right on Glen Mangnall’s doorstep.
A wildly conspicuous super-charged Honda is a tourist attraction that the coach loads of visitors aren’t always prepared for in Llandudno. It’s certainly a bit more alive and frisky than the ancient roman remains, fortified towns and medieval castles that this Victorian seaside resort is more commonly known for.
Never the less we’re sure that some of the glances are that of admiration, at least from fellow modders. Yet it has taken quite some time to reach this level of craftsmanship. Although Glen was quite impressed with the over all driving experience, the element of fun and engineering it still seemed quite underpowered by his standards.
The next step then was mulling over the creative potential that his S2000 had and to prioritise what modifications should come first. Then it was down to the gruelling job of researching various companies before handing over a wad of hard earned cash for the project.
As all modders are aware, once you get the bug you become very tunnel vision about creating the perfect motor and this means a lot of sacrifice in financial terms. Luckily, Glen earns quite a packet as a partner at a printing company and the majority of it has all been allocated to his succession of performance cars.
The first upgrade for the S2000 was 17” Blitz three-piece alloys and Yokohama tyres, 215/40 at the front and 245/40 at the rear. These were complimented by a fully adjustable Tein coilover suspension with damper ride height control. But Glen wanted it to sound racey as well as having a more road hugging set-up and decided that a HKS Hyper Muffler with twin back boxes was what was needed for the perfect pitch.
But the craving for more mods was still buzzing through Glen and he knew that even the HKS filter he purchased next would fall far short of the power demands he had in mind. The new Toda cams and pulleys did the job of lighting up his face like a Harrods Christmas window. However it wasn’t until the Vortech Supercharger was feeding more compressed air to the engine that Glen was fully contented.
TDI were the company responsible for tuning Glen’s S2000 and with 20 years of experience under their belts and tons of glowing reports from customers he felt sure he was in safe hands. Despite it being the first time TDI had installed a supercharger on this particular model, it seems as though it was made to measure. That said, mapping the ECU to deal with the extra power surge is a pretty meticulous operation. TDI also have to ascertain the driving conditions on our largely unpredictable roads but then experts do tend to make the job look easy.
Of course, fiddling around with things under the bonnet can result in a few knock-on effects. Over all Glen’s been really lucky, except for going through eleven clutches that is. Some barely lasted hours and in the end he knew he had to make the trek back to the TDI specialists to see if they had a solution. What do you know? The eleventh clutch is baring up despite the way the Honda is insensitively chucked about on a daily basis.
Yes, this is Glen’s daily driver and despite giving back only 10-15 miles for every gallon of fuel it guzzles, Glen wouldn’t have it any other way. His main agendas were that it was quick and reliable despite the extra dent in his wallet. Yet he wasn’t prepared to take any short cuts by using cow boys on the job and using a reputable company definitely paid off. All that was left now was to put the show in to the go.
Spoon’s S2000 race cars had always been alluring to Glen and having already got a throttle body upgrade from them among other tweaks he decided to invest in their body kit too. He went through J W Racing and despite having to wait over five months for it; he could at least gloat in the fact that he was the first in the country to have it. He then left it to Ian Hughes, a local bodywork specialist to fit the front and rear panels as well as carrying out the paintwork.
But just as they thought their work was done and dusted, Glen requested a Seibon carbon fibre bonnet and a rather prominent GT Spec E Wing spoiler. However Glen is now contemplating the removal of the spoiler as he fears it might detract from the motors slick good looks. A touch of smoothing and de-badging is also on the cards.
Due to his desire to keep off the pounds, the ICE has been kept to a minimum. But Glen has opted for a Blitz timer and a HKS data logger so should there ever be any question over the charger’s superiority or the S2000 other vital stats, his mates will have to read the computer printout and weep. Either that or be prepared to sit beside him through a sequence of North Wales’ most punishing bends.
