WILD CARD

It was one hell of a gamble to alter a machine of this calibre but it seems that Belgian owner, Youry Bioul had the stakes weighted in his favour.

Having previously owned some outlandishly tuned Audi’s and VW’s, 31 year-old Youry decided that he was ready to embark on a much more costly, high performance project involving a 996 Porsche Career 4. He’d already forked out for a normally aspirated model and was happily parading it when he spotted out of the corner of his eye, the next best thing.

Parked up behind the Bi-turbo model, he couldn’t resist a thorough inspection. The outcome of which involved a hefty bank loan and a frantic search to find one just like it. But Youry being Youry went one better than that still, bagging himself a second-hand yellow model which had already been tuned by Gemballa to churn out an remarkable 550bhp.

This was still not original enough for Youry though, he was determined to incorporate his own design touches. As is an agenda for many modifiers, Youry wanted his motor to be as smooth as the silk lingerie collection worn by Kylie, and just as desirable. First to ditch was the door handles and locks, these have been replaced by a more sophisticated remote entry and a quirky silver waterproof button next to the windscreen wipers which has been borrowed from an ATM machine. Youry decided that plastic was not the way to go so both the roof’s runners and gutters have been replaced by metal filler and the rear wiper has also been discarded.

Our man also decided that the slats that filled the vents would have to be removed, together with the line on the bumper that leads around to the exhaust. Having achieved a smoother rear end, Youry walked around to the front and pondered upon the improvements that could be made here. He’d heard through the grapevine that he could purchase a 997 conversion kit from DP Motorsport in Germany so this was sourced for the front end.

It wasn’t an easy task to fit it as the kit uses the original 996 bonnet but provides two new front arches and 997 headlights. DP Motorsport also provide an aftermarket bumper which emanates the 997 style. Once fitted, Youry collaborated with Independent Racing to make the bumper look even more aggressive. This involved enlarging the front vents by 3cm each and removing the slats. The vents were also enlarged for practical purposes as well as aesthetic, which meant that the turbo’s radiator could be more efficient.

The surgery on the front end was far from over though, the side repeaters were soon to be deleted and smoothed over and the side skirts were colour-coded to the new shade Youry had chosen. Surprisingly perhaps, the choice of colour is rather subtle compared to the rest of the car but it seems Youry had gone back to his routes with a VW/Audi platinum grey re-spray. Due to the metallic pearl effect, the Porsche’s sheen looks best in bright sunshine.

The Five spoke, polished Billet rims from the U.S.A are far more bling and have been tailor made for the project using both aluminium and titanium. They were chosen due to their fleeting resemblance to the old Fuch wheels and were made to suit the specific offset and dish specifications. At the front they measure 8.5x20” and at the rear 10x20”. With an offset of 45mm and a 7mm spacer for calliper clearance at the front, you would expect a bit of rubbing but as always, Youry had a solution. He swapped the 245/30 tyres he’d originally chosen for slightly trimmer 235/30 Pirelli P Zero specimens and hey presto, job done. Apparently though, the ride is slightly compromised by the new rims, although the handling is unaffected.

Even so, Youry wanted to upgrade his suspension and make the handling even more precise. Independent Racing custom developed a Four air bag system which independently lowers the ride height of all corners of this motor, making it look like a pimp wagon. Now this air suspension he was assured would also be compatible with the speed and safety of the 996 and was as likely to induce body roll as a super model’s tea party. This is because the set-up allows the pressure in one air bag to go to the opposite side while cornering in order to balance the load.

Youry wasn’t worried about loosing his luggage compartment to house some exceedingly attractive air canisters. Of course, Youry was not worried about attracting attention either and the air suspension certainly does that. It’s also very conveniently controlled with a simple flick of Four switches inside the cabin.

Resourcefully these switches have been wired to use the two electric window switches and two other switches that the convertible would have used and these are placed on the centre panel. To operate the windows, Youry now uses a once lifeless button on the central vertical panel as well as the old rear wiper button. The pressure gauges have also moved to where the phone would be on the dashboard. All that was left, for now at least, was Black and Grey Alacantara leather re-trim with double stitching and the striking Porsche badging which now adorns the front seats.

This heterogeneous creation is a regular at shows and often attracts more than the odd confused stare and even looks of utter dismay from the more orthodox Porsche fans. But Youry didn’t set out to please everybody, he set out to create a motor that was entirely unique and expertly finished, which it certainly is.

Ok, so he was dealt a great hand to start with, in a metaphorical sense but the way he’s played the game was what made him a winner. This is because it was his own demanding aspirations that he set out to beat and better, and he’s done that hands down.
