Our love affair with East Asia has resulted in many illicit and fruitless conquests to bring our ideal GT-R R34 back to UK shores but don’t get disheartened just yet, it seems there is a way…
Check out Ben Linney’s fine V-Spec example which clearly indicates the kind of calibre his customers at GT-Culture can expect when purchasing an import through them. According to Ben, he only ever buys in something that he would want for himself but of course the crème de la crème of the fleet he reserved for himself – who wouldn’t?
Being the authorised distributor of Top Secret in Japan, GTC were able to secure ownership of this very rare yet eccentric GT-R V-Spec model as a showcase motor. Now we say showcase but of course it is just too wild to always be sitting pretty on exhibition stands. You will often see the GT-R at various track events across the country including the well-hyped Time Attack challenge.
When stationary however you will note how well the Top Secret G Force kit accentuates the front end of the Skyline as well as increasing its nasal airflow. The bonnet and side skirts now give the car a lighter weight advantage whereas the carbon fibre diffuser assists the R-Wing GT2 rear wing in keeping this lairy machine stuck to the tarmac. Finished in black paintwork the colour echoes a dark fury that’s simmering away in the engine bay while the 18” TE37 wheels from Rays Engineering are a decadent gold shade. The selective scrolling of brand names is also well placed on a motor with a clear passion for racing.
At the heart of the Skyline’s appeal though is that very tuneable RB26DETT engine which has been tweaked in-house by GTC and also benefits from twin Garrett 2530 turbos. A recent dyno test confirmed a total of 480 horses are available at top whack, 1 bar of pressure is also ready and eager from 4,500rpm.
A closer inspection of all the power-inducing mechanics leads you to marvel the GTC quad layered intercooler which is front-mounted and sits 4” deep. There’s also a network of pipes which are made from aluminium to withstand the heat of the engine. A 19-row Grex oil cooler was also chosen to manage the temperature of the Castrol Edge 10W60 Sport oil. Together the oil and its cooler enhance as well as manage the consistency of power. Ben is also convinced that the Castrol oil gives him the edge on the race track, an assumption which is backed up by several professional race teams.
In terms of airflow an Apexi dual power induction kit is responsible for drawing in enough of the stuff to satisfy the turbos. The same Apexi brand is also used for the radiator and exhaust system. At the other end of the chain, expelling air is also more effective thanks to the 50mm HKS external wastegates.
The Apexi’s Power PFC standalone engine management system also makes sure the fuel is used resourcefully as it is transported through the fuel rail to 680cc Bosch injectors as well as those uprated Bosch 044 motor sport fuel pumps.
Now with all its inexhaustible power, Ben thought it unfair to expect the standard clutch to withstand these demands so he fitted a twin plate ceramic drag speciality from HKS. Apparently it’s still pretty versatile when it comes to everyday driving but where it really excels is on a drag or traffic light start.
Again tapping in to the liberating nature of motor sport, a lot of stripping down took place in the car’s interior in order to keep the weight as low as possible. Recaro seats added to the ambience inside this ultra sporty capsule as did the five-point roll cage which of course also gives it greater stability.
The crisp handling of the GT-R was also imperative in terms of driving pleasure as well as to give this powerful machine some synergy. An Apexi N1 coilover suspension kit provided a winning formula due to its ability to provide all out stiffness or refined comfort according to whichever is required. The ultra gripy Toyo T1R 265ZR30 are also deemed to be as comprehensive at grounding the car’s power as they are to spell. Extra reassurance also comes from the aesthetically pleasing Project Mu brake discs and pads with Brembo four-pot callipers.
The only other crucial bit of kit was a body-shaking sound system. This is guaranteed to make you selectively deaf by the time you reach an age of parental duties and its your turn to give the little nipper a bottle feed at 3am in the morning. Ben, enjoy those Blaupunkt GT speakers while you can, as well as the spare cash that you can indiscriminately throw at whatever aftermarket goodies take our fancy. But then if you are dead set that East is East, a spruced-up, mechanical Japanese model will be the only beauty in your life for the foreseeable future.
