SKYLINE’S THE LIMIT
The Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 is widely acknowledged as a radical machine, that’s even before it’s been tampered with by the likes of someone as passionate and talented as Andy Barnes.

There are many have-a-go heroes about that have all tried to push the skyline to its limits. In modified circles it has become somewhat of a contest as enthusiasts strive to utilise an engine that seems almost boundless in terms of the break horse power it can churn out.
Some go down the conventional route like Andy; they start from scratch with a standard road car and try to master the art of tuning. Some just want credit without all the hard work and so they opt for shipping a drag prepared R34 over from Japan. Whilst others just blatantly lie about the spec of their Skyline, so of course when it comes to the crunch and they are asked to race it over the quarter mile, they bottle out.
In fairness however, Andy has come up against some fierce competition and there are a lot of die-hard modifiers to challenge. Yet Andy proved his pride and joy could cut the mustard in October 2003 at the Japanese Performance Show. Quite spectacularly his blue beast hurtled down the quarter-mile at 144mph and crossed the line in a breath taking 10.2 seconds.
So how did he accomplish such a feat? Working for Sumo Power (a supplier of Do-luck parts for Japanese cars) meant that Andy had a lot of expert advice and support at his fingertips. But as you would expect, Andy is pretty handy with Skylines himself and has picked up a lot of tricks of the trade.
Two days before the 2003 Japanese Performance show, Andy’s car had a dyno reading of 916bhp, this was before the nitrous oxide was used. With the aid of this trendy and rather expensive laughing gas, the dyno would probably read about 1150bhp. So will Andy ever be beaten or will his R34 go down in history as being too fast and too furious to challenge? Only time will tell…
