Pop the hood of a 1967 Shelby Mustang GT 500 and it’s clear to see what all of the fuss is about. It uses a V8 iron block is water-cooled with a cast iron removable head. The engine produces 355 horses to boot and has a top speed of 133mph, making it an adrenaline junkie’s heaven.
The brainchild behind this car was Caroll Shelby. He envisioned a mind-blowing Ford 428 to replace the 390 block. This took the world by storm and send competitors running with tails between their legs. The muscle war was on and Ford had flexed its might very publicly, demanding the worship of petrol-heads across the globe.
Of course in the 60’s muscle cars could be driven to the max; there was little to stop you honing it around open roads at dangerous speeds. Today, you’d be better advised to take it on the track to experience its ultimate performance. In just 4.8 seconds the GT 500 will reach 60mph and it will sprint the quarter-mile in 13.6 seconds averaging 106mph.
