Rear Wheel Drive proves too costly for Up city car

Volkswagen has scrapped plans to make its up and coming city car rear wheel drive. The decision has been made largely for cost reasons and now with the front-engined lay out it can share many more components with exisiting VW models. The Up is an important model for Volkswagen as it is the sucessor to the outgoing Beetle, a brand which has been at the heart of many enthusiasts since 1953. The new Up is powered by a 1.2-litre 3cylinder engine which now that its up front makes the car 400mm longer. Expect UK versions to be well equipped with plenty of gadgets and creature comforts and to arrive in showrooms by 2010.
