Porsche 917 celebrates 40 years
It came in all sorts of weird and wonderful body styles and the engine was just as wacky but all that really mattered in the 1970s was its fire cracker presence at Le Mans.

These days it’s a given that Porsche can produce outstanding sports cars but we tend to forget the journey that won them this acclaim. Of course the brand managers never miss an opportunity to remind us and the 40th Anniversary of the 917 is no exception. It was the predecessor to the 911 road car and dominated the famous Le Mans series from 1970 – 1974 as well as stacking up other victories all over Europe in its 5-litre, 800kg category. By 1974 when the 1,200 hp 917/30 Spyder version had its racing premiere it seemed it had outgrown its own league and no other contenders could match its performance. This led to the CanAm series changing the regulations to exclude the 917 from competing. Instead of just accepting it had had its golden day; Porsche transferred much of its technology to the 911 road car which came complete with a side-exhaust turbocharger. The history is all beautifully exhibited in the Stutgart museum but the soul of the 917 is very much re-incarnated in the sports cars we have today.
