Anyone who has ever spent a rainy Sunday afternoon glued to video games will know that the legally ambiguous RX7 which stars in EA’s ‘Need For Speed Carbon Hands-On’ is a vision of utter brilliance. It also has the sheer brute to battle it out against exotic Super Cars and the handling to make mincemeat out of Muscle cars when it comes to controlled cornering.
Of course in real life Mr Gonzalez would never dream of getting involved in anything as reckless as Canyon Duals (Please raise your right hand and say that) but he has lent us the privilege of some simulated magic! The recently released game from Elecronic Arts is yet another cool spin-off from the ever popular ‘Need for Speed’ Movie. This time though, having had plenty of wannabe tuners take their seat behind the controls, EA has really taken heed of all the constructive criticism.
What this means is that we get an even better idea of what a carbon-silted 475bhp Mazda RX7 feels like. The handling is certainly more authentic than it ever has been and even the brakes require a more measured approach. Ivan’s actual car benefits from outrageously ‘Lowered’ shocks filled with compressed air. Also due to the sprawling dimensions of the Fortune Veilside bodykit, the RX7 has a rather intimate relationship with the tarmac and this comes in pretty when you need to change the car’s angle at speed.
Talking of angling the car, the drifting in the new game requires a lot less mechanical aptitude than in real life; it will still titillate the imagination but you need to get yourself along to a track day to feel how delicate the balance of power really is. For Ivan, his RX7 is a bit too precious to thrash around the track. Although he has the occasional blitz out on the road to remind himself of all the hard work that has gone in to it, his Japanese bruiser is mainly used for shows and tuning events.
29 Year Old Ivan spent a generous 110,000 Euros customising his motor but having had 7 other cars before it to practice on and also having the enviable position of being a tuning store manager he was pretty confident that he could make it a success. If titles are anything to go by then we can safely say he’s won the respect of fellow Spanish modders having landed ‘Car of the Show’ at the Barcelona Tuning Show, Galaxy Cars Top Pro and The Top Pro Maxi Tuning Show.
It hasn’t all been plain sailing for Ivan though; he did have to do quite a bit of sweet talking to blag a Fortune Veilside Kit from Japan as this item was exclusively made for the movie. After a lot of pacing the floor and unrequited telephone calls, all the parts arrived to him on time. The whole modifying process took a total of 7 months with all hands on board. Ivan also had the support of various brand-name sponsors which is always a bonus when it comes to bagging the very latest quality parts.
His next ambition is to somehow acquire a Dodge Charger 2005, be that by lottery win or a drunken bet with a celebrity. Failing that he’ll scout out a Honda NSX and tune it to realise a potent 800bhp. Money is pretty tight right now though, having splashed out so much on the RX7 and there’s also the wife and kids to consider. Of course you need a very understanding other half if you’re going to dedicate so many hours and devotion to a hobbie. But then even if you’re not an enthusiast yourself, getting to ride in it has got to be thrilling!
