For example you’re hanging out at a honey haven in Florida right by the beach; there’s a light chill in the air rather than that heavy wet heat and the OJ’s are tasting better than they ever have. Last night was chilled out because that gorgeous air hostess you’ve been hanging out with for the past couple of days had an early flight. Today you’re feeling pretty sharp and unlike most of the other guys in the joint, you’ve also got the guarantee of a highly promiscuous date later on in the evening. Yes, the keys to a 400bhp 350Z with a tank full of petrol and an endless memory of feel-good driving tunes. But just as you spot the wide pretty grin of the waitress and the way her whiter than white shirt leaves barely enough to the imagination under these neon lights, the air hostess walks in. Her flight was cancelled and she’s here another three nights – you’re only here for the next two and then it’s back to the grindstone in Manchester.

Feeling a little torn you glance over to the next table to buy yourself a minute or two before she clocks you through the crowd. Then you notice the guy that’s already stolen your thunder. Making eyes at him the barmaid totters over to this guy’s table to join him and a stunning brunette who seems equally pleased to be sharing her company. Surely with a glass that big, that Vodka’s got to be water and those car keys do look decidedly familiar. But as that pang of male ego seethes up inside you a surprising amount of intellect forces its way in to put a brighter perspective on this scenario. If he’s got a 350Z and two women at his table then one is going to have to be left behind. Ah, but that still means you have to choose between the Denise-Richards look-alike barmaid and the dead-cert air hostess who can’t get enough. If only…

At this point it’s probably best to come out of your trance and quit imagining yourself as the owner of a highly tuned Japanese Roadster which has somehow been shipped to Florida for your week’s vacation. Of course if your name is Chris or Craig and you’ve lived here pretty much all your life and you actually do own a supped-up 350Z then we’re all dead jealous. Especially because with two near identical cars there’s a strong likelihood you can take two near identically beautiful women with you – well that’s the theory.

But how will the women choose? Both the cars have smoother, brighter paint jobs than their fresh beauty-parlour tipped nails, the wheels on each motor are both humongous 19” examples and even your average Jimmy-Choo wearing heiress knows that a turbo and an open road equals a whole lot of fun. Almost to appease us, 25 year-old Craig pipes up about his Redline 350Z Track model being ‘a bit dated in the power stakes.’ Well ok, Craig but even as standard this 3.5-litre V6 isn’t one to hang around at the lights. “It’s reasonably priced too,” adds Chris. Until you start toying around with it that is. Having a motor with a VQ35 power plant was always going to be too much of a temptation for an adrenaline junkie like Chris. “It’s well known that normally aspirated bolt-ons are a waste of time when it comes to the 350Z so I opted for a single turbo alternative from Turbonetics which turns it in to the animal it always should have been.”

Twenty-two year-old Chris Dindial, owner of the Daytona blue 350Z backs up this assertion. He’s messed around with Headers, the exhaust, cat, intake, even the ECU but few benefits prevailed until he went down the forced induction route, this time with a twin turbo supplied by APS. Both lads knew they needed to be a tad prudent with the level of the boost if they were going to stick with same internals. Running at around 9psi is still very respectable though and both boast at least 400 break at the rear wheels. This extra brute isn’t just to brag to the girls about down at the Florida beach bars however, visit the drag strip or the Autocross course of a weekend and the lads will put their figures where their lead-heavy right foot is.

Of course, looks count for a lot in Florida’s body beautiful sunshine state and there’s no doubt a lot of hard work has gone in to honing these cars to perfection. Craig is the first to admit that he’s had quite a bit of the groundwork done for him at the factory in terms of the track trim which entails Brembo brakes all-round, spoilers with rear underbody diffusers as well as Nissan’s Vehicle Dynamic Control. From an aesthetic point of view though Craig has customised it with an INGS LX full lip kit; the break down of which is a front lip, side skirts and rear apron. The fibreglass Veilside V2 bonnet is also an added extra; this then justifies its value by providing cooling vents over the turbo. In addition Chris has lighting upgrades for the front and rear, he’s removed the rear wiper, had the grille cut out so as to allow admirers to peer in on the aggressive looking front-mounted intercooler. Nissan would surely be proud of these complimentary additions. The black 19” Rays G-Games Wolf77 two-piece rims and the lower ride height provided by Eiback Pro Kit springs then provide the double chocolate and biscuit layer of your ice-cream sundae; well you’ve got to go the whole hog!

The snarling, wild expression of the Daytona blue model owned by Chris is equally beautiful, yet slightly more menacing. Leaving the bodywork clean and sticker-free, our focus is fully on the lines of the INGS+1 N-spec kit which gives Chris’ motor its prominent bumper and side skirts. The intercooler is also exposed as on Craig’s car but Chris has distinguished his Z with a carbon fibre overlay for the B-pillar and door mirrors. Smoked headlights at the front and the smoked overlays for the rear lights and bumper are synergists of this sinister ambience. The shaved rear hatch and twin-turbo badge planted subtly on its behind are further reminders that this is no ordinary Z.

Funny enough the commonalities are a fluke of taste as Chris and Craig only met after both projects were complete. It’s also easy to see why they are both so complimentary of one another. Despite the shared additions though, each car has a unique persona and certainly a different temperament when you put your foot down. Craig’s larger single turbo has a real neck snapping effect when he accelerates where as Chris’ smaller twins are more linear in their power delivery, so the kick is less sharp and obvious.

For now the lads are content with their 9psi, which is a figure not to be played down. Although in the modifying world once you open Pandora’s box and know all the other delights there are to sample it is hard not to let your mind wander. Chris knows he could have 800bhp out of his Z if he gets his bottom end done and Craig has caught wind that Turbonetics are developing a stage 1.5 and stage 2 turbo kit using a larger Turbonetics GT Killer turbo so we await an update soon. If only all propositions were as sweet as the choices that lay in the laps of Chris and Craig!
