Ford is gearing up a racy debut for the L.A. Auto Show later today. The company plans to show off the new Ford Focus race car concept, that will morph into the company`s team car for the 2011 British Touring Car Championship season.
The car is based on the 2012 street legal Focus, and uses the automaker`s 2.0-liter turbocharged Ecoboost engine. Though tuning specs were not revealed, all cars are to use engines capable of producing at least 300 horsepower (224 kW) in next year`s BTCC series.
Developed in partnership with several racing teams, the process "has resulted in a global racing platform using a common Focus body and a safety cage built to FIA regulations - a competitive platform that can be tailored for regional competition, based on different rules," said Ford performance vehicle executive Jost Capito. While based on U.S. racing rules, the goal of the car is to make it available to teams and events held across the globe.
Features on the car include a FIA Super 2000 approved roll cage, Recaro seats with six-point harnesses attached, fire suppression systems, and data and camera systems from AIM. Also included on the display car are 18-inch anthracite wheels wrapped in Hoosier race tires, and 320-millimeter two-piece rotors in front used with racing brake pads. Adjustable end links and sway bars, and AST coil-over dampers round out the performance features.
