PRO OF THE CLASS
Paul Doyle fought hard in this season’s Time Attack Pro Class and gained a respectable third place despite being a top category rooky.

Having achieved two class wins and second place in the Club Pro Time Attack championship last year, Paul was ready to take his driving and his Subaru Impreza to the next level. KSport brakes have since come on board as a sponsor so as well as getting some sturdy callipers and discs he has also benefitted from their technical experience. The Impreza’s brakes are also fitted with EBC`s Bluestuff NDX pads. Remarkably both are available for street use so if you have taken a shine to them, you too can blast around town with these items.
Not many of us have Zen Performance or Scoobytech representatives lurking around in our garage though, nor Enginetuner`s Alan Jeffery to take care of any major mechanical issues we may have with our motors. These are such perks that come with being a Time Attack driver. Paul does his fair share of grafting however and when he is not at his day job at the power station you will find him tinkering beneath the bonnet of his beloved Scooby.
In addition to the Impreza’s increased engine displacement and menacing Garrett ball-bearing turbocharger, there’s Lateral Performance’s custom forged pistons, H-beam rods and AVCS cams. Supertech valves with ported heads and WRC-inspired 14mm head studs are also present.
New this season is a larger exhaust housing (1.06 A/R from 0.85) which means that peak power has increased. The longer spool times incurred by this modification are of little significance to Paul who is usually running his car at high revs and on boost with nitrous injection enabled.
This year Paul and the team have also opted for a custom ram air intake system for optimum boost pressure. There is now such an abundance of cold air that overboosting was feared. Another fear that had to be settled before the championship was fought was temperature management. Last year this caused a few upsets but it has since been rectified with twin 25-row oil coolers mounted behind the front bumper. There is also now an added member to the injector fuel-spray system which controls the intake temperature. The supply of fuel is also taken to the extreme with 2200cc of fuel per minute flowing from four ID-2000 top feed injectors which in car measures is serious binge drinking!
There are plenty more technical factors that come into play when deciding how best to distribute torque. There’s a Quaife-style limited slip device at the front, a more thoroughbred Kaaz alternative at the rear and a Driver Controlled Centre Differential (DCCD). This string of letters incorporates both a Neetronics standalone controller capable of 12 preset profiles (10 are user-defined) and a Impreza`s Syvecs electronic choice. The latter tirelessly monitors a stream of data to determine speed, throttle position and braking power so the ECU can constantly adjust the behaviour of the chassis.
The chassis incidentally has hand-picked anti-roll bars and custom-valved dampers for the purpose of winning races (what a result at Anglesey - a 1:14.873 lap time as well as pipping Gavin Renshaw to the post). Modified suspension mounts, precise re-positioning of the mounting points and adjusting the arches have all resulted in exceptional balance and accuracy.
With its WRC-spec bodyshell and stiffened composure achieved by the FIA-spec roll cage as well as carbon-Kevlar body panels to widen its appearance, this Subaru Impreza is one fine show of machinery. It also handles its new Pirelli P-Zero (road worthy) control tyres with grace although Paul was quite attached to the semi-slick track versions from last year.
Aerodynamics of course have been another crucial task and everything from the rear diffuser to the louvres and vents in the front wings together with the boxed areas behind the rear wheels ensure that the air is escaping properly and not affecting the down force.
Overall then, it’s been a pretty successful year for both Paul Doyle and KSport which have proved over the six month season that their brakes are up to the demands of this brutal class of Motorsport.
Attention now turns to the 2012 season, KSport have confirmed thier continued support into 2012 for Paul and the team, and with even more pro teams set to enter the increasingly popular Time Attack series the KSport team look forward to pushing for more podiums and wins throughout next year...
