Maserati hasn`t downsized its niche sports cars yet but that hasn`t stopped Fiat`s tuning arm, Abarth, doing it for them. Fiat like to remind us now and again that it owns both Ferrari and Maserati and by having its mother brand 500C transformed as a tribute model it highlights this premium connection rather well.

As a niche sports car brand, Maserati has suffered with its sales in recent years whereas superminis have seen a boom in buyers. It has diversified this year with its Kubang premium SUV and maybe in the future an Aston Martin Cygnet rival will be on the cards. In the meantime Abarth have used its creative licence in issuing its namesake with a three-stage clearcoat of Pontevecchio Bordeaux, as well as giving it an electric roof in grey fabric and Xenon headlights. The exhaust has "Record Monza" variable back-pressure and a "dual mode" volume control system together with hexagonal shaped tips just like the Maserati. The Suspension has also been tweaked and there are unique 17-inch "Neptun" alloy wheels which have been designed by Maserati, Brembo brake discs and calipers and upgraded shock absorbers are also standard issue as well as two plush grey leather travel bags. Under the bonnet is a 1.4 Turbo T-Jet 16v engine giving out 180hp, while the electrically-operated manual Abarth Competizione gearbox and steering wheel paddles add to the premium feel. Only 499 Abarth Fiat 500 695 Tributo Maseratis will be made and the model will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. The Maserati edition comes three years after the red hot Abarth Fiat 500 695 Tributo Ferrari which wowed Frankfurt show-goers back in September 2009.
Lastly, as with all Abarth Limited Editions, the Abarth 695 Tributo Maserati makes its lifestyle statement with the Tramontano Tribute to Abarth Travel Pack, consisting of two grey leather travel bags.
