money was a big factor as well as the fact that it would be a valuable learning experience if he was to get his hands dirty and see the project through from start ’til finish. after all he did have quite a bit of experience behind him and that nickname ‘peraero’ is a good hint as to where he got it from. yes, being swedish, per had quite a fondness for the saab aero 93 and had gained himself a real reputation since strikingly transforming one with his own fair hands. having emerged from his garage, sanity and social skills intact, he decided that he should find himself another project. the catalyst occurred at the sema 2004 event when he spotted a pretty special hyundai coupe and thought; i’ll have a bit of that. very soon the wheels were in motion and he was setting to work on his own very unique interpretation of korean fineness. his first quest was looking for a wide body kit for the hyundai and after quite a hunt he came across shark racing in america and got one imported. ice was next on the agenda and to make it financially viable per did some homework to see if he could secure a sponsorship deal. his opportunist nature paid off and brl (www.brl.se) were more than happy to supply him the goods he required in exchange for some extensive advertising. having seen the saab, they were confident of per’s skills and knew he would be touring lots of shows with the car which would get them plenty of coverage. their investment has certainly paid off as with the four shows he’s attended so far, he’s already walked away with 12 trophies. in addition to this per was awarded a place in sweden’s bilsport top 10 show cars and won second place in sweden’s largest street car show. according to per, ice is what really stands out at shows, the more extravagant the better. not that nineteen 7” lcd monitors is excessive or anything and nor is the 400 hours per took to complete the whole ice install. the job involved sacrificing his rear seats and boot space for a custom glass fibre build filled with speakers, subs and amps from rockford fosgate stable. the tv screens are fitted just about everywhere, two in each door, one for each headrest, one for each quarter panel window, three in the boot lid and weirdly enough, two in the engine bay. a slim ps2 and three tudor maxxima 900 dc batteries are the main resources used to entertain the crowds at shows. giving the interior a more sporty look is the sparco bucket seats and isotta steering wheel, aside from this the hyundai styling prevails, including the standard dash. the engine is also pretty much standard for now, although when those nitrous bottles in the boot build get rigged up, per can expect to get an extra 75 horses out of it. a custom straight-through stainless steel exhaust also has a modest impact on bhp although it does give the coupe a pretty meaty engine note. being a show car, per also spent quite a lot of time on the exterior. the initial step involved stripping away the black factory paint and cutting away the wheel arches. this meant that he could then glue the shark racing wide arches in their place, screw them on and then add three layers of glass fibre and polyester with glass fibre filler in order to smooth the body over these humps. the bold front and rear bumpers as well as the side skirts are all from shark racing, whereas that showy carbon fibre rear wing is a veilside speciality. while adding more dimension and angles to the hyundai, the bodywork itself is decidedly smooth due to the aerial, front and rear badges, rear wiper and boot lock being removed. there are also carbon fibre mirrors and a flush shark racing fuel cap in place of the original items. the finishing touch involved some ice white paint and a clear lacquer coat over the top to give it a pearly clean glint in the sunshine. now for the wheels and at the top of per’s agenda is that they would have to be fat to match the tougher image of the car. of course using spacers were required, 50mm in the back and 30mm at the front and an offset of 47, no less for those mammoth dub spine 8.5 x 20” alloys. a shark racing coilover kit drops the body by between 12 and 15cm which makes it super low. however being so laden with ice, it isn’t really driveable on its lowest setting but it fits the whole show-going mantra. all in all the project took per eight months to complete and the labour he put in amounted to about 750 hours – quite a commitment eh? when the hyundai coupe finally saw daylight though, its reception seemed to make it all worth while for our swedish pal. he also could take credit for all the handiwork and now has all that added experience under his belt. we’ve got to hand it to you mate; you certainly have the passion for it and if you want something exactly done your way, doing it yourself is the way forward. top job. |
