OTHER INFO: AGAINST THE CLOCK
Normally good things only come to those who wait but in this case top results were required without the luxury of time.
Five weeks was the deadline that pro-modifier Peter Jynnesjo had to transform a 2004 Volvo S40 T5 in to what you see today. He was commissioned by Micro, a company that supplies styling and spare parts, they requested that he modify this model according to their design sketches. Micro had heard about Peter’s business On The Edge, in Stokholm and the reputation that proceeded him and so had every faith that he could do this project justice.
Of course Peter happily obliged and was provided with everything but the body kit.The latter is a full glass fibre prototype of the German designed Heico Sportiv S40 race car that won its class in the Nurburgring 24 hour race this year and as far as Peter is aware is the only one in existence.
Being an exclusive piece rather than a mainstream bodge it together jobbie meant that shaping it on to the car was going to be a bit of an ordeal. The bumpers, fenders, arches and skirts all needed to be modified to size before being smoothed together. However once complete and enhanced with an Autostyle silver carbon fibre rear wing, the T5 looked remarkably like a World Touring Championship Car.
But as the Swedes themselves will tell you, the expectations of craftsmanship are exceedingly high so every minute detail is to be considered. With this in mind, more smoothing was carried out as well as removing rubber strips and the shark fin antennae.
It seems to go against the grain then that the rear wing legs and diffuser have been left to go rusty but there is a method in this madness. As the car is a regular show-goer Peter is leaving the rust to catch the crowds attention; as if the colourful Micro livery and the Autostyle front intercooler weren’t enough to get it noticed, eh? Eventually he will lacquer the rusty parts but right now they’re having the desired effect.
The iconic Volvo lights have been left as standard to characterize the S40’s heritage but the front grille has been modified for the purpose of fitting the Heico front bumper. The wheels are also aftermarket items and were a bit of a headache to source. Volvo’s standard tyres have a unique tread pattern so replacing the tyres often means replacing the rims too. 235/30 Pirelli PZero Nero rubbers were eventually chosen due to their versatility on both the road and track. To compliment these a set of 20” dished black Tenzo-R GTS wheels were also picked out. A bit of imagination and a H&R adjustable coilover kit later and the T5 was sitting nicely on the tarmac.
But there was still something that didn’t look quite right. It wasn’t long until Peter put his finger on it; those factory fitted brakes now looked well undersized in comparison to the wheels. In an ideal world Brembo’s Gran Turismo kit for the S60 would have served the same purpose for the S40 but life is rarely as simple as this.
Peter did however buy the kit and modify it as best he could. This involved adjusting the adapters for the discs as well as a lot of other awkward cutting and wielding jobs. The brackets for the calipers however were not at all tweakable so he had to source a brand new set.
Now that it looked the part it was time to upgrade the performance. For this Peter looked to a fellow Swede for inspiration and found just what he was after at a company called BSR. A re-map and a few upgrades allowed the T5 to realise 290bhp which is a 70bhp increase over its standard equivalent. He could have gone for a wilder 450bhp but that would have meant changing the turbo and exhaust system as well as fitting an induction kit and relocating the ECU. Although tempting Peter needed to bank on the engine’s reliability as an every day run-around, he also clocks up a lot of miles attending shows to flaunt all his hard work and give the company Micro a bit of a plug.
To live up to his company’s promise of ‘On the Edge,’ the 34-year-old Swede decided to do something a bit dramatic in terms of the In Car Entertainment. At shows a blasting ICE install tends to draw in people like ants to sugar and Peter’s offering is no exception.
Good job too as the work that went in to it was pretty extensive. The S40 has a very complex electrical system which had to be completely separated from the electrical system for the ICE. Once this was achieved Peter mounted three screens in the roof which were hooked up to two DVD’s, one which was housed in the roof and one in the glove box. A custom glass fibre and wood frame surrounds these screens whilst the roof is lined with red felt.
In a custom box in the boot are four MDS subs and three MDS audiophile pro amps to give them boost. This set up can be seen from inside the car where of course he’s also got some killa MDS speakers, these take pride of place in the door builds. In-car strobes are another reason Peter needs an 80kg 230A truck battery in his boot. Other additions in the cabin include a customized centre console with all the necessary instrument gauges and a complete set of Autostyle adjustable seats.
Is there anything else Peter could possibly upgrade this very out there T5 with? For a man who lives and breathes modifying there’s always changes and ideas to implement and for next year’s show season Peter hopes to completely strip out the interior, get rid of the heavy battery and add a roll cage to give it the feel of true race car. He’s yet to put this idea to Micro who have commissioned the project but if all goes to plan there’ll be even more reason to check out Peter’s T5 at one of the many European shows.
