KEEP THE CHANGE

This immaculate 750bhp 2JZ-GTE Supra was supposed to be a downgrade for Chris Lloyd, proprietor of Hyper Sports and Racing (HSR) in Wigan who had £10K left over from selling his R33 GT-R. It just shows that value and price are two different things.

This MK4 Supra certainly started out as a great bargain in terms of market prices but in the modifying world it was so much more than that. If modding was likened to head hunting then a Supra’s engine would be like signing Amir Khan. The opportunities for honing more power defy the realms of reason and Chris was just the man to put this feat in to action.

A GReddy T78 turbo was at the top of his agenda, followed by a GReedy Type R external wastegate which would replace the actuator and control the boost pressure. However to accommodate the Turbo, the GReedy manifold beneath it would need reinforcing, so a few supports were added to pacify any signs of stress.

The next little challenge was finding an inlet manifold which could cope with the volume of air. As it happens, the GReedy inlet manifold had the right credentials for the job due to its capacity to accommodate twice the volume of air to pass through it. The air is delivered to the manifold via the front-mounted three-core Blitz V-Spec intercooler and both ensure that the 1.8 bar of pressure gets to the engine.

Being in the business he is in, Chris also knew that a Nissan QX throttle body would best compliment the new inlet manifold and he was determined to source a second hand one. Hours of phoning around found him a reduction of £500 on a spanking new one. His company HSR had also been quite impressed with the GReedy Profec E-01 controller so this was the model used to control the boost.

Although a turbo provides a rather resourceful powering system, there would still be quite a lot of waste gasses looking for an escape route so Chris upgraded to a 100mm GReedy downpipe. This then leads to a HKS Hiper Muffler exhaust which is about as subtle as Kat Slater when it comes to making itself heard. The woman is clearly very efficient in taking in one big gulp of air at the start, which is also true of the Supra’s GReedy Airinx induction kit. Cold air is fed to this by a curiously positioned ported headlight conversion which is HSR’s own composition.
In terms of the actual engine block, much of the bottom end remains standard although there are Clevite big end and main bearings. HKS 87mm forged pistons have also been brought in to aid the standard rods and cranks. Then there’s the HKS cams which provide an extent of 272 degrees on inlet and exhaust cycles and a HKS 1.6mm head gasket which lowers compression.

Of course the right fuelling system was very much part of the power equation and twin Walbro fuel pumps were brought in for the job. These each provide 255 litres per hour and both use separate fuel lines. One uses the Supra’s standard line whereas the other has been given its own route. They both then meet before flowing through a rising rate FSE pressure regulator and then to the top-feed HKS fuel rail with an internal diameter of 11mm. The 2JZ-GTE model also benefits from fuel injectors that have a cubic capacity of 1000cc. They can deliver the fuel at a rate of six litres per minute which sounds to us like it would be more than a little pricey.

A fully mappable Autronic SM2 ECU with integrated MAP sensor and traction control was also fitted. With a few more tweaks, Chris reckons his Supra will be able to churn out up to 800bhp. He also hopes to fit drag wheels at the rear of the car and enthral audiences with a quarter mile time of under 11 seconds. But the clutch will also need up-rating and Chris has opted for a Helix twin or even triple plate version which will spread the load across all the discs.

Whereas the Supra was pretty rare before, it’s now one of a kind and is enjoying the limelight as HSR’s demo model. This will be until a new challenge beckons and the car changes hands. But make no mistake, you’ll do very well to prize this gem from Chris as time and passion over rides the expense of cold, hard cash.
