2009 Mitsubishi Lancer tests for Dakar Rally

Dune Rallying looks fun, doesn't it? Especially in this monster of a 4x4 from Mitsubishi. This 2009 Lancer is pictured here in testing with Team Repsol Mitsubishi Ralliart. 



Hiroshi Masuoka, was among the handful of drivers who have been given full reign to put it through its paces. Having competed twice before in the Dakar event he stands in good stead to test whether its up to scratch and luckily for Mitsubishi the Japanese driver is said to be very enthusiastic about the new diesel model largely bcause it is much more torquey across the rev range. The Lancer has a lot of tug at tickover where it is needed, so it can winch the 4x4 up sand dunes and pull it out of ditches much more easily.

Elsewhere in Europe the Lancer Evolution with the same engine has been making a name for itself. Driver Joan 'Nani' Roma from Spain posted three fastest stage times at a Portuguese event in a Pajero/Montero. Stéphane Peterhansel, nine-times Dakar winner will also be piloting when the car makes its official debut during round six of 2008 FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup in Portugal between 30th October and 2nd November. But the less glamorous test will be the 8,000km stint in Morocco where it will train for the Dakar event.
